Berkshire Hathaway is a New England local textile company founded in 1839 by Oliver Chace and headquartered in Omaha, NE. It was purchased by Warren Buffett in 1965 and became an investment holding company. Vice-Presidents are Charlie Munger, Ajit Zain (Insurance Division) and Greg Able (Energy Division).
Berkshire Hathaway operates through a variety of subsidiaries including property and reinsurance, utilities and energy, freight rail transportation, finance, manufacturing and retail services.
Insurance Segments: GEICO primarily sells auto insurance and is Berkshire Hathaway's main source of income. Berkshire Hathaway Reinsurance Group underwrites excess loss and proportional reinsurance worldwide. Berkshire Hathaway Primary Group primarily undertakes several lines of property and accident insurance.
Other Segments: The BNSF segment operates rail systems in North America and Berkshire Hathaway Energy operates electricity and gas utilities, including power generation and distribution activities, and real estate brokerage activities. The McLane Company provides wholesale distribution of grocery and non-food items. The Services and Retail segment operates a variety of retail businesses including partial aircraft ownership programs, airline pilot training, electronic component distribution, auto dealerships, trailers and furniture rentals.
